Speaker Bio
Mark Hoffman, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Auburn University where he specializes in advanced powertrain systems. Dr. Hoffman has 20 years of expertise in kinetically controlled combustion, multi-fuel combustion, mixing controlled combustion, in-cylinder heat transfer, thermal barrier coatings, catalytic emission systems, particulate emissions characterization, and waste heat recovery. Hoffman currently leads the Federal Transit Administration’s low and no emission transit bus testing program at Auburn University, which develops novel transit bus components to reduce or eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from the transit vehicle fleet. In addition, Hoffman currently serves as Principle Investigator for a Department of Energy sponsored effort on enhancing heavy-duty vehicle fuel efficiency via platooning in the presence of exogenous disturbances. Hoffman serves as an associate editor of the SAE Journal of Engines, is the associate chair of the SAE Combustion Committee, and is a member of the SAE Mobile Emissions Committee. Hoffman has been honored with the Auburn University William F. Walker Teaching Award for Excellence, the Auburn University Mechanical Engineering Outstanding Faculty Member award, and the SAE Forest R. McFarland award. Prior to his employment with Auburn University, Dr. Hoffman was a research assistant professor in Clemson University’s Department of Automotive Engineering where he also served as director for Clemson’s Automotive Engineering Certificate program. Dr. Hoffman received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Union College (2003) and both his M.S. (2008) and Ph.D. (2012) from the University of Michigan (ME).
